Pop Music and Pop LyricsPop music is a musical genre most available to the public, opposed to classical music which was accessible only to the society’s elites and is mostly propagated by the media, opposed to folk music which is primarily promoted by mouth. It is the most consistent part of popular culture during the twentieth century and continuing to the present. Pop music often includes elements of rock music, hip hop, reggae, dance, R&B, soul, funk and sometimes from country songs. Pop music songs are mainly characterized by lyrics about love, freedom, success. They have a danceable rhythm and simple harmonies and repetitive structure so that people retain them quickly and hum them anytime they please. However, this is not a characteristic only to pop music. Pop music kept topics of everyday life, things that are very familiar to all masses and the most described events are the ones that are not so spectacular and out of ordinary. This turned out to be a recipe for success and the success that once had with its emergence, still continues to grow among the masses.
Pop genre implies mass marketing efforts by record labels to attract consumers which make this style to be sometimes hated by other musicians. Clips and pop concerts are heavily promoted by the media and artists are very competitive in live shows and extravagant choreography. Most CDs and DVDs have become very cheap and the average age of the consumers of this genre has dropped considerably over time. At first, artists like Frank Sinatra sang about affairs, champagne and night clubs and the lyrics were most destined to investors, businessmen and social strata. As the discs become cheaper, more teenagers were able to influence the market, especially during the tournaments that promoted the Beatles. Over time pop sparked many controversies and got accused of offering negative patterns, instigating dangerous behavior and sometimes the lyrics were seen as gateways to sin.
