Music For Meditation

The art of meditation goes back many years and its practitioners have sometimes used music to get into a more relaxed state. Modern users of meditation have found that there is indeed a connection between the music and the act and many of these have started to use music in a more prominent role. This perception has created a new genre, called music for meditation, that can take on many different forms. While some examples follow the traditional Indian music that is used for meditation, others use electronic instruments and have a completely different feel.

People use meditation for a wide range of reasons and the music may be customized to help a person reach their meditation potential. However, one common theme is that the majority of music for meditation is instrumental and without any discernible vocals. While radio music may be the right choice for driving, it certainly will not provide the right environment for a session of meditation. A person that would like to listen to music that is specially made for the act of meditation will find many names of composers that are involved in the genre. John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, and La Monte Young are just a few of the names that are commonly associated with music for meditation.

Some people that practice meditation on a regular basis have found that music that has a slower tempo may be the best for the spiritual practice. In addition, others who listen to music while they meditate prefer ambient tones that do not have any tangible rhythm. Compact discs with this type of music often use natural sounds, such as waves crashing or rain, to create a constant white sound that has no rhythm. Of course, a person will need to experiment with different types of music to find out which one will give the best atmosphere on a personal basis.
