The Music of Ukraine

The country of Ukraine is a multi ethnic state of Eastern Europe located in the north side of the Black Sea. Many of the ethnic groups that live in Ukraine are known to have their own unique music traditional. Some of these groups have also created several specific musical traditions, which are associated with the land where they live.

The traditional music of Ukraine found itself between Europe and Asia, which reflected within its music in a mix of exotic singing melismatic style with chordal harmony. The general characteristic of Ukrainian folk music is its used of keys or minor modes, which incorporates second intervals. Its music is known to be harmonically complex.

Ukraine folk song vocal music and performers singing styles is divided in several broad categories such as: 1- Solo singing, 2- Solo singing with instrumental accompaniment and 3- Acapella vocal style. The vocal of Ukraine exhibit several forms such as: Monodic, heterophonic, homophobic, polyphonic and harmonic. A very known active proponent of Ukrainian vocal goes by the name of Nina Matviyenko.

Nowadays all folkloric elements have made a resurgence in modern pop music of Ukrania. An example of an Ukrainian Pop group is the famous group called Nu Virgos. This group has been on the music scene since 2000. (Nu Virgos) music online or also at your local music store. The group has five studio albums and three compilation albums. The group has recorded several tracks on Russian and English.

The Pop music of Ukraine is Western influenced. Since the 1960s this type of music has been growing on its popularity in Ukraine. In the 1970s there was several rock folk groups that came out during that decade. In the 1990s it occurred the explosion of the Ukranian pop music to the world when it was brought by the famous Chervona Ruta Festival.
